Individual nodes

The list of nodes available in the community is published in [nodedb]. Please add your own node to that list, even if it is not yet functional. For more information about nodedb check out the Node Map page. See also Ip Allocation.

Backbone nodes

Wouldn't it be great if we could set up a wireless backbone that spans the Valley and Downtown? It really shouldn't be too hard. Juneau's mountains are both a bane and a blessing, in that they are obstacles, but also provide high elevation targets that are visible from most locations in the city. A backbone could easily span the Mendenhall Valley with only a few access points on the surrounding ridges.

The State of Alaska Information Technology Group has [tested a wide area network] in 2001 using links from Centennial Hall to the DOT building on Egan Drive. This test seemed to be quite successful and demonstrates how easy it would be to get line-of-site connections in Juneau.

How do I connect with my laptop?

Buy a decent 802.11b card, such as a Senao/Engenius NL-2511 or SMC2532W-B. If you shop properly it will cost about $40. These cards have superior receive sensitivity and better signal see Hardware Comparison for more information.

Find a node, set your SSID to juneauwireless all lowercase, set your computer to grab an IP via DHCP. You should at this point be able to connect to every linked node in juneauwireless by pinging their addresses. A top level domain is setup .juneau which you can access wireless services. If you would like to also be a root server for the .juneau name space please let Myron Davis know and we can work it out. A easy interface will be setup to register .juneau domains.

Where do I find nodes?

Not on this page, but you can check out Ip Allocation, or the Node Map or take a look at Other Wireless Networks for non-juneauwireless wi-fi hotspots!
